Sunset at Illes Malgrats

In front of you are the sea and the silhouettes of the islets. You can stay where the sun sinks behind the Malgrats, or do something we particularly recommend: move a few metres along the viewpoint until you find the perfect angle for the sun to set right between the two islets.

We tried it.

And it is spectacular. 🌅

We watched our sunset from the Illes Malgrats viewpoint in Santa Ponça.

This is the actual location where we took the photographs and the source of all the information we share below.

Getting there is very easy.

On our visit, we arrived via the street that passes this spot and parked on that same street.

We went in the motorhome and parked without any problem, approximately 30 metres from where we positioned ourselves to watch the sunset.

But there is something important here:

Arrive in good time.

We arrived approximately one hour before the sun went down.

When we arrived, we parked without rushing. With only about ten minutes left before sunset, however, the situation had changed completely: cars were arriving and could barely find anywhere even to stop.

Especially in summer, we would never wait until the last minute to come in a motorhome.

And there really is no need to.

We have food, a cold drink in the fridge and all the comforts of our little home on wheels. Arriving early is not losing an hour: it is starting the sunset an hour earlier.

There are approximately four or five stone benches at the viewpoint.

But do not count on finding one free.

The Malgrats are beautiful even without a sunset, and it is common to find people sitting and simply taking in the scenery. As evening approaches, naturally, there are even more people.

This is where we have an advantage. 😄

In the garage of our motorhome you will find comfortable, lightweight folding chairs that are very easy to carry.

Take one, walk a few metres, choose your spot and you are all set.

We do not need much more.

This is probably the best advice we can give you about this place.

Do not arrive at the viewpoint, sit in the first place you find and simply wait.

Look at where the sun is descending and move.

The two Malgrats create different compositions depending on where you view them from. By walking just a few metres to one side or the other, you can make the sun go from disappearing behind one islet to sitting perfectly between the two.

We searched for that spot.

And when the sun began to descend through that exact gap, we understood why this sunset is so special.

The islands completely dark, the Mediterranean ahead and that ball of fire slowly descending between the Malgrats.

There is something important to bear in mind.

The sun does not set at exactly the same point throughout the year. Its position above the horizon changes with the season.

The photograph we achieved, with the sun descending between the Malgrats, will therefore not look exactly the same every day of the year.

But that is also part of the charm.

Watch where it descends that day, walk a little and find the best composition the viewpoint allows.

This advice applies to many sunsets, but here we saw it perfectly:

do not leave when the sun disappears.

Many people see the last sliver of sun disappear and automatically start to leave.

Wait.

If there are high clouds, they may catch the light still remaining below the horizon and turn from white to yellow, orange, pink or red.

That happened to us.

After the sun disappeared between the Malgrats, the sky continued to transform and gave us a completely different second part of the sunset.

Sometimes the show continues after its star has already disappeared.

The Malgrats have a great deal in their favour: they are easy to reach, you do not need to walk far, the open sea lies completely before you and the scenery is worthwhile in itself.

But for us, one thing makes them different:

being able to play with the positions of the islets and the sun.

Arriving an hour early, parking without rushing, taking the chairs from the garage, finding our spot, waiting as the sun sinks and finally watching it disappear between the two islands…

That is exactly the kind of moment we look for when travelling in the motorhome.

Arrive an hour early. Do not rush. Find your angle. And do not leave when the sun disappears.
