Some journeys begin with a destination.
Others simply with the urge to go.
Some roads, villages, mountains and coastlines are best explored without rushing. Some places are marked on the map. Others appear by chance.
This is where we’ll bring some of them together—not as a list of things you must do, but as small stories, hidden corners and ideas for enjoying the road.
Mallorca gives us spectacular sunsets throughout the year, but if what you want is to watch the sun sink all the way down and disappear into the sea, not every place on the island will do.
The sun sets towards the west, so we need to look for stretches of coast facing that direction and, above all, with an open horizon. There are plenty of places where you can enjoy the colours of the evening sky, but not all of them allow you to watch the sun reach the line of the sea.
Sunrise is just the opposite. If you want to see the sun emerge from the Mediterranean, look for places facing east.
And of course, the weather always has the final say. Fog, low cloud, haze or poor visibility can hide the sun before it reaches the horizon. On the other hand, a few well-placed clouds can transform the sky into something spectacular, filling it with oranges, reds and pinks. Every sunset is different, and that is part of the magic.
One of the things we love about looking for sunsets in a motorhome is that there is no need to arrive at the last minute. Especially in summer, arriving early is actually a very good idea.
We have food, cold drinks and everything we need inside our little home on wheels, so waiting for sunset becomes part of the experience.
There are also comfortable, lightweight folding chairs in the garage of our motorhome. They are easy to carry to a viewpoint, a beach or whatever little corner you choose to watch the sunset.
It may sound like a small detail, but it makes a difference. Instead of spending half an hour standing or sitting awkwardly on a rock, you can sit comfortably, breathe, look out to sea and wait for the show to begin.
In this guide we will gradually discover different sunset spots around Mallorca and share what we actually experienced at each one: how we got there, what it was like with the motorhome, how early we recommend arriving, where we chose to watch from and the little tricks we discovered along the way.
Now all that is left is to choose a place, unfold the chair and let Mallorca do the rest.
In front of you are the sea and the silhouettes of the islets. You can stay where the sun sinks behind the Malgrats, or do something we particularly recommend: move a few metres along the viewpoint until you find the perfect angle for the sun to set right between the two islets.
